Geelong's Cultural Venues Offer Heritage, Multicultural Events for Visitors

Geelong's veteran AFL player Mark Blicavs recently defended the Geelong Cats' club culture as open and inclusive. This statement arrives alongside city-led efforts that shape the venues and programs visitors encounter when exploring local culture.

Multicultural Programs and Pakington Street Events

Geelong has held Refugee Welcome Zone status since 2002. The city recently marked Cultural Diversity Week to showcase communities that make up 17.7 per cent of the local population. Visitors can experience these communities through Pako Festa, Victoria's premier multicultural festival, which returns for its 44th year on February 28 2026 and transforms Pakington Street with food, dancing and the Pako Parade.

Heritage Strategy for Protected Venues

The City of Greater Geelong has started a community engagement process for its Heritage Strategy update. The process aims to produce a draft document in early 2025 that will guide heritage protection across the next decade. Visitors interested in historic sites will find these protected places form part of the venues that define the city's cultural landscape.

Major Events Strategy and Local Participation

The City of Greater Geelong has adopted the Geelong Major Events Strategy 2024-2029. This five-year plan seeks to raise the economic impact of major events to 131 million dollars by 2029 while increasing local participation and lowering carbon footprints. Visitors can follow the rollout of events supported by this strategy through official city channels.

These initiatives rest on documented council decisions and statements from club representatives. The combination of street-based festivals, heritage planning and event growth provides concrete entry points for anyone wanting to engage with Geelong's cultural offerings. Visitors can check the City of Greater Geelong website for updates on engagement sessions, festival details and the events calendar as each program advances.
